What this policy covers
This policy covers the BaoBoop Cantonese and Mandarin learning app at baoboop.com and the related BaoBoop browser extension.
Information stored locally
BaoBoop can be used without an account. In that case, app data is stored in your browser using localStorage.
- Study progress, ratings, skipped words, favorites, and daily activity counts.
- App settings such as language, practice mode, card range, and translator preference.
- Personal notes that you choose to write on cards.
- Extension settings such as language/view, voice speed, and auto-play audio.
Optional account and sync
If you sign in with Google, BaoBoop receives your Google account ID, email address, name, and profile picture from Google OAuth. BaoBoop uses this only to create your account session and sync your study data.
Synced data can include progress, ratings, skipped words, tone trainer progress, app settings, and personal card notes. BaoBoop does not receive or store your Google password.
Cookies
When you sign in, BaoBoop uses a secure HTTP-only session cookie to keep you logged in and protect authenticated requests. Anonymous use does not require a BaoBoop account cookie.
Browser extension behavior
The BaoBoop extension looks for Chinese text locally in your browser so it can show a lookup popup. On supported AI chat and YouTube pages, it can make non-link Chinese text larger and clickable. On other sites, it opens the popup only for text you select or highlight.
The extension does not store selected text, browsing history, or full page contents. If you use the built-in translation preview, the selected Chinese text is sent to Google's translate.googleapis.com endpoint to request an English translation. If you click external translation links, the selected text is opened on that third-party translation service.
Third-party services
- Google OAuth is used for optional sign-in.
- Google Translate and DeepL links may be used when you ask to translate text.
- Your browser or operating system may provide text-to-speech voices for audio playback.
BaoBoop does not currently run analytics scripts to track individual browsing behavior in the app.
How data is used
BaoBoop uses data to provide flashcards, stroke practice, tone training, saved notes, settings, and optional cross-device sync. Data is not sold.
Deleting data
You can reset local progress or clear notes inside the app, and you can clear BaoBoop browser storage through your browser settings. To request deletion of synced account data, contact support.
